Renovating in the Fieldston Historic District

The Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Fieldston Historic District on January 10, 2006. It covers about 257 houses on all or parts of 20 blocks. If you own one of them, changes to the outside of the house, such as windows, roofs, porches, additions, fences and paving, generally need approval from the Commission before work starts.

In 2009 the Commission adopted a master plan for Fieldston. It sets design guidelines for common kinds of work, and work that follows them can be approved by Commission staff rather than going to a public hearing, which is usually faster. Ask the Commission which route your project takes before you sign a contract, and build that time into the schedule.

When you talk to contractors, ask whether they have worked in a city historic district before, who will prepare the drawings and photos the application needs, and whether their price assumes approval of the materials they are quoting. Interior work that does not touch the exterior is usually outside the Commission’s review, though a Department of Buildings permit may still apply.

If you live in one of the area’s co-ops instead, the building’s alteration agreement is the first step; see our co-op alteration agreement guide.
